WP Categories Simplified (video)

If the internet were a library…

I like analogies, don't you? Sometimes analogies and stories can make things that appear so complicated very simple. That's what we're going to do with the oh so confusing WP categories today. Watch the video and then let me know what you think!

Did it help? Let's Review:

  • Internet/Search Engines = Library
  • google bots = librarians
  • your blog = a series that fits in a certain large category (500's for example)
  • your blog post = a book in the series that fits in a smaller category (511-520)

If you give your blog post 3 categories the librarian gets confused and doesn't know where to put it on the shelf, so it gets bumped into the “figure this out later” bin (i.e. further down in the relevant searches).

It is therefore best to have only ONE category per post.

Tags = the index of your book

Tags don't have anything to do with your ranking in search engines (placement in the whole internet library). They are only for organization within your site.

You can have as many tags on your post as you think necessary to help someone find relevant content when searching on your site.

There are some things you can do to make it extremely obvious to the librarian that you should be placed in this section, but we'll talk about that another day.

Leave me a comment or a question below and you could be featured on the next Connecting the Dots!

That helps Katie. I’m a very visual learner – only discovered that when I started homeschooling, so if you can draw me a picture – in my mind like this- I actually start to understand it.

    Thanks.
