Hello, my friends. How can you live your uniqueness in business? I recently had the opportunity and joy to be interviewed on somebody else's podcast. Dawnita Fogleman of Prairie Dust Trails has a podcast, Real Life on the Prairie. She interviewed me, rather, about our upcoming book, The Flamingo Advantage: How to Leverage Unique, Stay Relevant and Change the World.
I thought it was a really good interview and wanted to share it with you all here. So without further ado, I will lead us right into the recording from Real Life on the Prairie podcast.
Uniqueness in Business as Service
Dawnita: Hello, this is Real Life on the Prairie with Dawnita Fogleman of PrairieDustTrail.com. We've got Katie Horner, the author of a new book, The Flamingo Advantage. And we're going to be talking about turning your message into a business that helps and serves people while bringing in income to help and serve more people. I just love that concept. Thank you for joining me, Katie.
Katie: Thanks you, Dawnita. I'm excited to be here today.
Dawnita: Please introduce us to your new book.
Katie: Yeah. So The Flamingo Advantage, as you mentioned earlier, is how to leverage your uniqueness in business, stay relevant and change the world. And essentially, it is a marketing guide for believers in business for how to show up authentically as God created you to do living your life and doing business based on the truth of His word and how to carry that out in your business. And I'm really excited about it.
Leverage Your Unique and Change the World
Dawnita: Oh, I am, too. I got a preview of the book. I got a sneak peek.
Katie: You kind of helped edit the book.
Dawnita: Well, I'll let you put that in there. I do, yeah. Not advertising, but I have mad editing skills. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Of course, I worked with you for a number of years now since the publishing of my book. There are times that I can't read it. I couldn't read through the book without crying because it really touched my heart in so many places. This isn't a book just about marketing. It is something every business woman should get. Because marketing starts with the heart, right? What's the full title of the book?
Katie: The Flamingo Advantage How to Leverage Unique, Stay Relevant and Change the World. And the whole idea of leveraging unique is, I think in our culture today, we're told that in order to stay relevant, you must fit in. In order to be relevant, you must be like everybody else. And I believe that's a lie.
Lies You Believe in Business
This book was written in part to address those lies and to conquer them with the truth of God's word, that He did make you unique and he did put this business in your hands for a specific purpose. When you embrace that, you're okay with the uniqueness, and you learn to leverage your differences in a way that can help you reach more people and bring glory to the Lord.
At the same time you will be relevant to them and that business, God's love, is relevant to everyone, regardless of what age you're born in, regardless of what business you do, regardless of your spiritual gifting. God's love is relevant to everyone and in this business that He's placed you in. Your hands, essentially are the tool He wants you to use to get that message to the world. So a big piece of this whole flamingo marketing is embracing the uniqueness in business and life that is you so that you can get the message out better.
Standing Out in the World
The flamingos there, they they don't recognize it. Doesn't even notice it? I don't even believe they're conscious of how unique they are. They're just there. They're pink out in the middle of this big expanse of blue and green and none the wiser. Yet to everything around them, they are so unique and outlandish. Right. Yet, they just accept it, go on, and do what they were created to do. If we would stop focusing on being scared of how unique we are, embrace it, and just allow ourselves to do what we were created to do, our entire world ecosystem would be better off. That essentially is one of the big messages of this book.
Dawnita: I love that. I absolutely love that. I have been out here and some people think they're in the boonies, but unless you're in Australia or something, you really don't understand the boonies like the panhandle of Oklahoma. While I always knew I was different, it really made an impression on me whenever I posted a video on my Facebook page of me hanging clothes on the clothes line outside and explaining why I had hung different clothes, different ways.
It kind of for me it exploded and I got so many comments about that. It's just part of everyday life for me. But for so many other people in the world, it's very, very unique and leveraging that in a way so that people can realize it doesn't matter where you're at, you can save on your electricity, you can live more sustainable by doing simple things.
When Your Business Uniqueness Finds You
Sometimes we don't realize. I never cared for flamingos before. It was something that some people put out in the yard. Know the little plastic flamingo thing. Never seen one in person before. But the way you explain the Flamingos and the way you talk about it and then tie that into business and business as a ministry is just amazing. I just I love it. I love it.
Katie: But it's totally a God thing because I've never been a bird person. I didn't particularly care about flamingos. I don't even like the color pink personally. But, you know, it's just something that God did. When we we took a family trip about three years ago now to go see flamingos in the wild.
Here in Mexico, where we live, there's a place where they all come and migrate in the winter. So we took a family trip to go see that because we never had an opportunity to do that before. As we were coming home from that trip, the Lord just sort of handing me these lessons just like the Flamingo.
Business Branding that is Unique
The believers in business also do this. And just like the Flamingo, like just these lessons kept coming. And that's where the first book came from. And when the first book hit bestseller, then everyone automatically, associated the flamingo with me. I get messages of people sending me photos of flamingos and videos of flamingos, and people are posting to my Facebook page all the time. I saw this and thought of you, and it just sort of became this accidental branding totally a God thing, because it was not my intention to take pink or a flamingo as part of our brand up until then.
But it caught on and it is unique because there is such an important lesson attached to it. It gives a visual that helps people remember what they've learned. That is also a biblical principle. Why do we tell stories? Why do we set up stones of memorial? Why do we have plaques that commemorate things? It's so that when people see it and ask, What is this all about?
You can tell them what your God did here today. I think that's so important for anyone in business to have something that makes you unique, that provides that sort of curiosity factor for people like why do you have a flamingo in your office? What is with the flamingo thing? Or questions about the flower in my hair is another one. That one is more about me than it was about branding because I needed something physical that was a daily reminder to me of God's favor in my life.
Created for More
That God created me this way, that He made me the way I am with all of my delights, all of the quirks, the way that I love color and love expressing myself. That he delighted in that. The flower became sort of that crowning flavor that would remind me of who my God is every day. It has also become something that is part of our branding now. It opens doors and conversations all over the place. I don't think every business needs a flamingo, but I do think you need to hone in on what is unique about you that you can leverage in the marketplace to create those opportunities and those conversations.
Dawnita: I think it's important for everyone to realize you already have that. One of the verses you and I both love, you use it a lot, is out of Esther. You were brought to the kingdom for such a time as this. You have a uniqueness and God has a plan for you to make a mark and he's giving you a message. He's already given that to you. It's how are you going to use it? Ministry is a wonderful thing but we all have to eat as well. So making a business out of it, that's the big thing. That's something that I think is a real eye opener for more than just me is that the more money that we're able to make with our business and our message, the more we're able to pour out to others.
Income in Business and Biblical Money Mindset
Katie: Exactly right. The more money you make, the more good you can do. If you're thinking biblically about money and you go back to God's truth, what does God say about money? What does God say about the role of money? Most of us immediately think of the love of money as the root of all evil. That's the initial thing. When you think money and Bible, that's immediately what pops into most people's head.
Yet we equate that to money being evil or making money being bad or something. It's not. It's the love of money. Money is just a tool. If you look at all of the ways that God mentions money in Scripture, money is a tool. The only value it really has for Him is in terms of teaching us stewardship is in terms of us having a tool with which to do more of His work in the kingdom. It doesn't have a value statement here on Earth.
So I think it's really important for us, especially as believers in business with differing backgrounds and differing, things that we were taught about money growing up to go back to the Bible and say, what does God say about money? What does He say about making money and using money in kingdom work?
Uniqueness in Business to Serve the Kingdom
Because the more money you can make, the more tool you have to use to grow the work of the kingdom, which opens more opportunities to you for ministry. That was a big thing because we came out of full time ministry to have a full time business and now we have more ministry than we ever did before.
It's sort of this this paradoxical thing, how is that even possible? I don't know, except I know my God is the God of the impossible. The more that we pour ourselves into ministry, the more doors open or the more that we push ourselves into the business that He's gifted us, the more doors He opens for us to minister to people who need Him through that business.
Dawnita: A lot of times we're able to minister to people we wouldn't otherwise be able to if we were called a ministry. We've had people ask why we didn't start a church out here where we're at, and there's a lot of church buildings out here. But our ministry has been to the unchurched mostly. Anytime during the weekend and during the week, for that matter, we can have somebody show up. I've had people that that were kind of regulars.
Go Out and Preach the Gospel in Business
Whenever I saw their vehicle drive up, I'd put on a pot of coffee because they needed to be sobered up because they were they'd been drinking. They must had been having a rough week at work or something like that, and they'd come in.
They knew I had a cup of coffee. I've never allowed alcohol in the house except for renting showers and. But they knew that they had an open place to let a load off. Watch the children do their silly antics, have some coffee, sit down in a calm place and be fed into. They needed to be told that even though you've got these problems and you're having these issues, look at how God's blessed you. I think He wants to bless you more.
It's a very special thing to see a cowboy or an oilfield worker go from a really, really difficult time and start praising the Lord out loud for everybody to hear this. It's an amazing thing to see. So we would not be able to be available for that if we weren't making an income in business. Right?
Unique Gifts in Business
Katie: Right. And, you know, Scripture doesn't say if you're a pastor, go into all the world and preach the gospel. It doesn't say if you're a Bible school teacher go into all the world to preach. It just says you. You go, that means you and me and everyone else with the gift that you've been given according to the grace that is given it to you.
We all have differing gifts and differing talents. Wherever you are, whatever you've been gifted to do, you go into all the world and preach the gospel. How do we do that?
We do that through whatever tool is in our hands. If that is business, that is how you do that. You create those relationships with the people that you get to serve through your business. As the Lord gives opportunity, then you can talk to them about the most important business in their life, which is where do you stand with God?
How to Live Your Faith in the Marketplace
It's not something where you're obnoxious or where you're beating them over the head with scripture all the time. You just be you. Authentically show up as who you are, letting Christ live through you in your business. It creates these opportunities that when you're walking in the spirit and in relationship with God, you're going to see those opportunities clearly and be able to take the next step with those people who are ready for that conversation. That is how God does His work in the Kingdom. That's how the Gospel goes out into all the world.
Dawnita: Amen. Amen. Every time I hear you speak at an event there is always at some point in time that it leaves me in tears. In reading this book, I found myself in that place. In several places as well. And I've just really appreciate it. I think this is going to be another best seller. How many best sellers so far?
Katie: We've had nine so far.
The Flamingo Advantage
Dawnita: This is a book for you even if you haven't considered yourself a business person before. This is a book that everybody in this day and age should read with the economy the way it is. You know, you should not be afraid of losing your job ever, because God has given you the skills, the knowledge and the tools to have your own business. Most people just don't believe enough in what God has given them to make that first step. So I want to encourage you, no matter where you are in your life right now, get this book and then get extra copies for your friends and your family because it is it's a good one. It's something everybody can read.
Katie will bring you back to Scripture consistently with it. That's the important part, because our faith and where we stand for eternity is the most important part. So, Katie, any closing thoughts?
Katie: I would just add, you know, this is written to the believer in business. That doesn't mean that your business has to be promotionally Christian. You just may be a believer who runs a mechanic shop or a believer who teaches art or whatever the case. Or you may have something that is more products for Christians or whatever the case may be. Everyone who names the name of Christ needs to read this, and it is our goal to get it into as many hands as possible.
A Book and a Movement
This is not just something we're launching in July 2022. I expect us to be launching this for the next several years. It's one of those things that we can keep talking about forever. You need to base what you do on God's word, and that will give you the confidence to show up as He created you authentically in the marketplace. That's what's going to bring him glory and allow His kingdom to continue to grow. I can't wait for you to read it. I think it's going to be something you are going to want to share with folks and just really looking forward to what God does through this little tool of a book with a quirky flamingo on it.
Dawnita: I just love that. Thank you so much for for joining us today. I really, really appreciate it. Share this out to your friends and family. Remember, you can make it through the dust storms of life with God's divine help.
