FYS Episode #005

I am so happy to have Freelancer, Tara Bosler with me on the podcast. The purpose of this podcast is to show everyone that no matter your niche, no matter how small you may think your business is, no matter how well you are known…you can be successful in online business.

From College Faculty to Freelancer

Tara comes from a teaching background, having taught at a university for 8 years. Without a Ph.D., she could only ever achieve temporary/adjunct status in the college classroom. So when her class load was reduced, she needed a way to supplement the income she had lost. Using her background in teaching and communications, she decided to try freelance writing to get the income she needed.

Her plan was to work the writing as a side hustle for at least a year or two, while she built up her clients and income base. However, she was soon told that her contracts with the college would not be renewed, and had to change her 2-year plan to a 90-day plan!

Tara loved the flexibility that her teaching job offered her. As a single mom, she enjoyed the 3-day workweeks, a month off for Christmas, shorter work days, long summer vacations, and the general availability she had for her daughter. As her contract with the university ended, she had a choice to make…

Get a real job, with longer hours and no guarantee of how much time she could spend with her daughter…or make the writing business work.

Steps to Quick Business Growth

1. Get a business coach.

If you don’t have years of experience in business, a great coach will shorten the learning curve for you and help you reach success more quickly. Tara chose a coach over reading books or taking online courses because she needed personalized attention in order to grow her business as quickly as possible.

Tara’s coach also helped her to stay focused, kept her from spending money on non-essentials, and provided her with referrals that helped give her business a boost.

2. Be intentional about visibility.

There are so many social media platforms that can draw our attention away from our business. Tara Bosler was very intentional about choosing one platform to focus on. She is active on Facebook because that’s where her people are.

It’s very much being intentional about how I show up and where I show up, and where it makes sense to show up…and then pulling back in areas that didn’t make sense. – Tara Bosler

3. Follow your natural rhythms.

Tara’s coach helped her to make a master calendar for her workflow. Because she has her huge burst of creativity in the early hours, she does her writing work in the morning; then she does other things in the afternoon.

Recognize and identify when you are most productive. Allocate and dedicate the time for those activities.

4. Build Business Relationships Online.

Tara has found it vital to build relationships with other business women online. One way she does this is through virtual “copy chats”. She does one on one Skype sessions with women, where they enjoy coffee together, while in their own homes.

Each woman has time to talk about her business and get feedback on ways to improve or grow. Tara gives some great examples of how she uses these chats to grow her business. Listen in!

5. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help.

It is important to know yourself and your business and how someone can support you; and what you have to offer that could support someone else.

Always be prepared with specific ways someone could support you, because they want to, and most of the time they will follow through. – Tara Bosler

When she feels discouraged, or unsure of how to solve problems in her business, Tara leans hard on her “biz besties”, those ladies she has copy chats with. These other women, all in online business themselves, understand what she is going through on the hard days. She has also found support through her online groups, especially small Facebook groups with just a few, close, business women.

So how do you know when you’ve “made it”? That this thing you’re doing is actually going to work? Listen in to hear what Tara did that pushed her over the edge to success!

Success

In every episode, you will hear me ask my guest(s) for their definition of success. Here is Tara’s response:

Success is freedom with my time. I don’t need millions of dollars; I don’t need a yacht…but what I do want is to make my living working only 20 hours a week, so I can be able to spend time with my daughter, and never have to question if I can afford to be there. – Tara Bosler

If you are a woman who desires to be successful in your own online business, Tara would remind you that the online world is filled with possibilities and opportunities… filled with people that will help and support you…you have to put the work in, but the possibilities are truly limitless.

If you feel like the online world is too inundated with your message, just remember-

You are you! You have your own unique experiences to bring to the table, and you have your own point of view. You very well may have some overlap with other people, but you are going to reach people that they could never reach. – Katie Hornor
